Public survey studies of same-sex marriage have been largely inconsistent. It is true that support is polls juxtaposed to performance at the ballot box is lacking, but the trend is clear if we look at the long-term.
Frank Newport, of Gallup, opined:
The trend on Americans’ attitudes on same-sex marriage has not followed an entirely consistent trajectory. While the percentage in favor increased to 46% in 2007, it slipped to 40% in the following two years. In somewhat similar fashion, last year’s increase to 53% support has edged back down slightly this year to 50% — not a statistically significant change, but not a continued increase, either.
In my column on The Brenner Brief, “DOMA – It’s not About Equality, It’s a Trophy,” I analyze this phenomena further and also express my concern that this is really about relativism. Weakening protections in the Bill of Rights will require certain absolute truths that are embedded into our American national identity to dissipate into the realm of minority or non-existence. Right or wrong, as a moral question, is wholly irrelevant to the progressive agenda.
