Easter Vacationers Rocked By Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake In Mexico, Near Acapulco

BREAKING: :The U.S. Geological Survey said a powerful earthquake rocked Mexico Friday, calculating its magnitude at 7.5. Officials said the earthquake was centered near the getaway resort of Acapulco, where many Mexicans and some foreigners are currently vacationing for the Easter holiday and Spring break.

A reporter for the Associated Press who was on-scene said it was strong in the resort city where vacationers flocked, but fortunately there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake rocked Mexico City for at least 30 seconds, officials said, and buildings were swaying back-and-forth. People attempted to vacate high rises, opting instead for the safer ground-level streets. Fortunately, because of Easter, the city was not as crowded as it typically would be during Spring break.

The U.S. Geological Survey noted that — due to its location and muddy sentiment beneath the buildings — Mexico City is vulnerable to earthquakes. In 1985, a magnitude-8.1 quake killed approximately 6,000 people and demolished buildings in Mexico City, which is actually centered nearly 250 miles away on the Pacific Coast.
