VIDEO: Liberalism vs. Conservatism, Competing Visions for Helping the Poor

The bottom line, and where I seem to part ways with the hypocritical wing of the GOP, is that helping the poor is essential for two reason.

1. We are summoned by our Creator to care for our fellow citizens whose basic needs are not met.
2. Conservatives will never be able to limit government if they cannot win elections.

Let me put this another way to clarify. I do not, and never have, advocated for a social welfare apparatus that does not have accountability, or mechanisms in place designed to promote self-betterment. In “Our Virtuous Republic,” I wrote:

Limited government is not a means to liberty, it is an end. That is to say, there are always going to be a group of citizens who cannot meet their basic needs, and there most assuredly will always be politicians willing to promise that they will meet them. The difference between liberty and tyranny by popular support, or correctly termed “democratic despotism, ” is little more than the vehicle a free society chooses to use in order to meet those needs.

In others words guys, either we provide social services ourselves through civil society, which promotes and obliges healthy civic behavior, or progressivism will grow as the needs of our citizens grow. This is the biggest factor to account for the growth of government in the United States, and it does so at the expense to our liberty. It is called “democratic despotism,” and it never ends in the best interest of the whole of the public.
