After Obama’s reelection, unabashed liberalism and big government activism was coming out of the closet. Today, however, that outright unafraid big government push is dead in the water, as more voters than ever view the federal government as a threat to individual rights.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 56% of Likely U.S. Voters now consider the federal government a threat to individual rights rather than a protector of those rights – the Democratic ideology. That’s up 10 points from 46% in December, just after Barack Obama was reelected and felt embolden enough to deliver the most liberal inaugural address in American history.
Liberals, of course, are liberals thus 54% of liberal voters mistakenly consider the federal government to be a protector of individual rights. However, 78% of conservatives see the government as a threat, but 49% of moderates agree – surprisingly low for the GOP.
Overall, just 30% of voters believe the federal government today is a protector of individual rights, while 14% are undecided. No doubt, this figure represents conservative Democrats and independent voters who are skeptical and worrisome of the latest Obama scandals.
Scott Rasmussen in a recent column argued that the “biggest loser in the current controversies surrounding the Obama administration may be the president’s effort to build faith in the federal government.”
Most voters believe the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups and other conservative organizations was politically motivated, and that is even reflective in the latest Bloomberg poll. Bloomberg found that 48% of American voters believe that the IRS targeting of conservatives was politically motivated, and only 31% – the same roughly who still have unshaken faith in government reported by Rasmussen – reported to Bloomberg that the targeting was a product of “bureaucratic shortcuts.”
Lower even still, in Rasmussen just 20% believe it was done by lower-level employees at the Cincinnati office. A whopping 66% believe the order to target conservative groups came from Washington.
Additionally, 60% think it’s likely that other government agencies also targeted Tea Party and other conservative groups, which we found out today to be correct in the case of the EPA.
Democrats’ faith in big government continues to drive them to hold a much more favorably than other voters do. While 76% of Republicans voters and 61% of voters of unaffiliated voters regard the government as a threat to individual rights, a plurality – 47% – of Democratic voters still ignorantly consider the federal government a protector of those rights instead.
Although slow to grow legs at first, just over half of all voters now consider the Justice Department’s secret seizure of reporters’ phone records to be a serious scandal.
Additionally, 43% reported to believe the Justice Department secretly obtaining phone records from Associated Press reporters and Fox News’ James Rosen was primarily an attempt to intimidate the media, and 34% believe the department’s actions were driven by national security concerns.
Pathetically, in a country that was founded by Lockean Natural Law philosophy, just 25% of all voters think the federal government today has the consent of the governed. Lock, of course, was a proponent of a breakable social contract, which our Founding Fathers believed to justify separation from the English crown.
Demonstrating the unfortunately stranglehold liberals have on black Americans, 51% of black voters consider the federal government a protector of individual rights, but 61% of whites and 58% of other minority voters view the government as a threat to those rights. Black Americans are also the exception to the rule of religious observation – religious voters are overwhelmingly Republican – and provides further proof of the treachery rampant among leadership in the black community, which I detail in my book.
As usual, Washington is not just disconnected from the American people, they are on another planet, as 68% of the Political Class views the federal government as a protector of rights. A full 71% of Mainstream voters disagree.
While this is encouraging news, it simply means that the proponents of big government will continue their usual methods, which are not so out in the open for of the American voters to see.
