Americans Agree With Zimmerman Verdict, But Views Cut Racial Lines

Reactions to the Zimmerman verdict, or the just jury decision in the shooting of Trayvon Martin cut decisively along racial lines.

The recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that a plurality – 48% – of American Adults agree with the jury’s verdict that Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman acted in self-defense, thus is not guilty of murder or manslaughter in the shooting death of the black teenager.  Approximately one-third – 34% – disagree with the Florida jury’s verdict, while amazingly 18% are still not sure.

Other surveys simply do not support the claim by the race-mongers that America has an unfounded bias toward minorities without recognizing very real problems with the justice system.

Voters continue to believe the U.S. justice system doesn’t work the same way for all Americans. Overall, 45% of Likely U.S. Voters believe the U.S. justice system is fair to most Americans, according to another Rasmussen Reports survey, while 39% disagree and just 16% aren’t sure.

Even more – 65% – say that they trust the jury to make a just decision more than a judge, which supports the position that a majority of Americans are still well-aware of how politics infects – and affects – the justice system when prompted.

Not much was made of the study that found Americans view blacks as more racist than whites and Hispanics, which is a real shame. Party divide was certainly a factor, but nearly a third of Democrats agreed with the assessment, while more unaffiliated voters split with the GOP than liberals.

Even liberals – 21% – have the same sentiment. Rather than attack and defame based upon ignorance to the facts, we need to address the ignorance head on. It is a threat to all of our liberties.
