PPD Poll: Nearly Two-Thirds Of Republican Voters Want Boehner Replaced

speaker john boehner

House Speaker John Boehner R-OH) approaches media during 2013 partial government shutdown.

With two declared challengers and a growing list of House members opposed to his leadership, public opinion is building against Speaker John Boehner (R-OH). The latest PPD Poll of 500 likely Republican voters finds 65 percent say they want their representative to bolt on Boehner when the House votes for speaker this week, while just 26 percent support their representative backing him.

Interestingly, just 24 percent of Republican voters have a favorable opinion of the Ohio congressman, two points below the number supporting his candidacy to keep the gavel. Similarly, 61 percent view the Ohio Republican unfavorably, or 4 points less than the percentage of GOP voters who support a move to replace him. While only 14 percent have a “very favorable” opinion of Boehner, 32 percent say they have a “very unfavorable” opinion of him.

Conventional wisdom dictates that Boehner appears to be on track to garner the votes needed to avoid a second ballot, despite the fact he can afford to lose only 29 votes. The task of overthrowing Boehner, or any speaker for that matter, is a very tall order, indeed. In fact, it has not happened since 1923, when Frederick Gillette, a Republican from Massachusetts, took nine ballots to win re-election as speaker.

However, it is also true that Republicans have their largest majority since the 1920s, and if actual Republican voters had their way, then his days as speaker would most assuredly be numbered.

Top Reasons Republicans Support Replacing Boehner:

1. Broke his promise to fight Obama’s immigration/amnesty order “tooth and nail” (25 percent)

2. Hasn’t done enough to stop ObamaCare (19 percent)

3. Cares more about corporate welfare than the general welfare of working class Americans (15 percent)

Reps. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., and Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, announced over the weekend — Saturday and Sunday, respectively — that they would challenge Boehner for the position. Even though the PPD Poll did not ask respondents who they would like to see their representative back for speaker, PPD found increased support for the opposition in Sunday’s respondents juxtaposed to those surveyed on Saturday. That’s not to say Republican voters back Gohmert over Yoho, however. It likely reflects an observed increased awareness to the movement rather than some other factor.

PPD has confirmed nine members have declared their opposition to Boehner. The list includes Reps. Jim Bridenstine, R-Okla., Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., Steve King, R-Iowa, Dave Brat, R-Va., Marlin Stutzman, R- Ind., Water Jones, R-N.C., Thomas Massie, R-Ky, as well as Yoho and Gohmert.

Worth noting, one of the members on the list above — Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va. — defeated Boehner’s number two in an upset primary victory in 2014. Even if Boehner survives the insurgency, there are two noteworthy similarities regarding both Boehner and former Majority Leader Eric Cantor. First, illegal immigration played a major role in the public’s negative opinion of both men. Second, Boehner clearly lost something Cantor also found out he had lost, albeit too late — the public’s trust and support.

The PPD Poll of 500 likely Republican voters was conducted from January 3 – 4, 2015, and has a MoE of +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence. Interviewers surveyed respondents, the results of which are weighted to reflect a breakdown of 50 percent landlines and 50 percent cellphones.

  • And nearly 99% of Americans wants Congress to be replaced too! Throw them all to jail along with wallstreet and bankers.

  • Tough.
You dance with the girl you came with

  • House Speaker John Boehner premeditatedly passed a version of
the Senate’s amnesty bill S. 744 to Obama by August of 2014, but ALIPAC
supporters stopped his plan with our campaign that shut down Boehner’s visible
cooperation with Obama in under 48 hours!

How can Republican Members of Congress swear an oath of
office to “support and defend the Constitution” and then, as their first
act, vote to confirm as Speaker someone who has enabled the shredding of the
Constitution? As of Monday morning eight principled Members of the House have
publicly stated they can’t, and consequently they will not vote for John
Boehner’s re-election as Speaker, and we hear many more are ready to join them.

The magic number of Republican votes needed to throw the election
for Speaker into a second round is 29 because that’s the number of votes that
would deprive Boehner of the absolute majority he needs to maintain power. The
Tea Party leadership will not vote for him. The major majority of both
political parties are liars, corrupt as they only want to fill their pockets
    with taxpayer’s cash.

This year conservatives already have seven out publicly
against Boehner. The Capitol Switchboard number is 1-866-220-0044. We urge you
to call your Representative and urge him or her to vote for anyone but John
Boehner in round one when the election for Speaker is conducted on January 6, 2015 and
for the most conservative alternative that emerges in round two and beyond.

    The
current situation whereby Obama decreed amnesty for illegal aliens and, in
doing so, removed the United States from Constitutional governance, is a
plot hatched behind the scenes. This plan
allows Obama to take action that the elites desire but that the American public
does not want, while also letting Boehner and McConnell pretend to oppose him
when in truth they are protecting and facilitating Obama and these massive
violations of their oaths of office!

John Boehner deserves to be thrown out of his leadership
position and out of Congress for lying to lawmakers, lying to the public,
supporting amnesty for illegal aliens, and violating his oath of office to
protect and uphold the US Constitution!

A new poll (click) shows that more than 60% of Republicans
want a different Speaker of the House than that lying amnesty and Obama
supporting John Boehner! The good news is that if we can get 29 Republicans to not vote for Boehner this Tuesday, a true
opponent of Amnesty and Obama like Congressman, Trey Gowdy (R-SC) entered Congress with a definite
commitment to the conservative principles that have guided him throughout his
years in public service. At the core of those principles lies a firm belief in
a limited government that inspires trust and demands accountability. or Louie Gohmert could become Speaker!

Establishment Republicans, and Washington insiders who have made
millions feeding off Boehner’s brand of Big Government Republicanism, are
desperate to keep Boehner in the Speaker’s job. With John Boehner it’s more
of the same, as puppets of Special Interests.

They are doing their best to cheat, pressure,
bribe, bully and lie to Republican members of Congress to convince them to keep
    Boehner in power.

And with most Republican members of Congress those tactics
will work, but when the vote for Speaker opens on January 6, 2015 conservatives don’t
need most or even a majority of Republicans to vote against John Boehner; they
    just need 29.

  • Day One: They are eating their own.
    This bodes well…

  • I really wish that Louie would get elected Speaker. With Boehner we have gotten an endless stream of whining, punctuated by periodic surrenders to Obama on this issue and that one. Boehner regularly betrays all Conservatives and with him we are going to get more of the same. So we get 2 more years of betrayal and lies from Boehner. It is enough to make one cry.

    • “I really wish that Louie would get elected Speaker.” I so totally agree! Then the world could not avoid seeing what a vicious, vacuous and venal bunch the Republicans have become!

      • Are you sure that you are not talking about the Democrats? I will grant you that there is little difference between the parties, but I submit that the Democrats are the ones who have been saying that people who don’t believe that climate change is caused by humans should be executed. That sounds rather vicious, vacuous and venal to me.

    • Yep, the biggest idiot in Congress would represent the GOP well.

      • I presume that you are talking about Boehner.

  • Failure cannot be rewarded, so he should be removed and McConnell should not be Senate Majority Leader either. Fresh start.

    • How did that work out for you? lol

  • Educated voters agree Obama is the worst president ever to hold office, yet he was re-elected by a huge margin? Congress had a 15% approval rating however 90% were re-elected. Where are these disgruntled voters when it comes time to step into the booth? Most Americans no longer have the courage of their convictions, so we just go bouncing along, unwilling to take a stand. Blacks voted for Obama by 98%, and most blacks are uneducated, so why is anyone surprised at the outcome? Illegal aliens are being made citizens without training or sacrifice so why is anyone surprised at their loyalties? Black women stamp out children like cookies on a conveyor belt, so why would they vote any other way? Perverts are allowed to marry to get free benefits, so why would they back a conservative candidate? Maybe having a Military coup isn’t such a bad idea….remove the president and his cabinet,, dissolve Congress, reaffirm and enforce the Constitution and put the Military on the streets for say 6 months to stop crime, then start over with a new election and see if we can’t get this country back to it’s roots. Who knows it just might just work…Certainly what we are doing now isn’t. BTW, for what it is worth, I support Yoho for Speaker….might just work.

    • Really-well that is simply not true and you should actually be educated before you speak for those of us who are.

    • Treason. Obama was elected fair ans square, which is more than we can say for the last repub president.

      • I am sure I am wasting my time responding to a person named “acidrain,” but that’s ridiculous. Ask the former head of the Washington Post, and he will tell you, because he lost his job due to it, that he wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars to find out that a recount gave President Bush more votes than the official tally gives him.

I am no fan of G.W. Bush, but don’t be a tool.

  • Why should they start listening to the American people now? Republicans just do what they want-they don’t represent they people who elect them.

  • Rest assured Republicans, along with McConnell, this assures more years of mediocrity and failure, the true legacy of the GOP.

  • Hmmm…and yet he was re elected. Think any of these elected leaders care what we think?

  • I’m so delighted that nothing will ever change here…the rich will keep getting what they want until the 99% go ballistic.

    • So long as there is still a middle class and it still owns a significant amount of property, there will be no revolution in the street. Those revolutions only occur when the people revolting have nothing left to lose. A revolution at the ballot box, however…

  • The GOP is run by North Eastern liberals who despise conservatives just like their democrat counter-parts. They are looking to purge us. They have succeeded by continuing to ignore. us. We have given them the leadership and they are squandering it.
