The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development jointly released the new residential sales report for September 2018. The census forecast was expecting a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 625,000, but it came in way below.
While the report is very volatile, it adds to the overall picture of a housing market struggling in an otherwise robust and strong economy.
New Home Sales
Sales of new single‐family houses in September 2018 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 553,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 5.5% (±12.1%)* below the revised August rate of 585,000 and is 13.2% (±13.6%)* below the September 2017 estimate of 637,000.
Sales Price
The median sales price of new houses sold in September 2018 was $320,000. The average sales price was $377,200.
For Sale Inventory and Months’ Supply
The seasonally‐adjusted estimate of new houses for sale at the end of September was 327,000. This represents a supply of 7.1 months at the current sales rate.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) seasonally adjusted monthly House Price Index (HPI) indicates house prices rose 0.3% in August. The previously reported gain of 0.2% for July was revised upward to 0.4%.
The FHFA monthly HPI is calculated using home sales price information from mortgages sold to, or guaranteed by, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. From August 2017 to August 2018, house prices were up 6.1%.
For the nine census divisions, seasonally adjusted monthly price changes from July 2018 to August 2018 ranged from -0.7% in the Middle Atlantic division to +0.8 percent in the Pacific division. The 12-month changes were all positive, ranging from 4.0% in the Middle Atlantic division to 8.4% in the Mountain division.

The White House responded to reports of explosives being mailed to Barack Obama, the Clintons and elsewhere, calling them “terrorizing acts.” Sources tell People’s Pundit Daily (PPD) that at least two of the explosives were not sophisticated and none have detonated.
“We condemn the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and other public figures. These terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
A device was found by a technician who screens for the Clintons at their residence in New York, which was sent in a package that arrived late Tuesday. Hillary Clinton was in Florida, but Bill Clinton was at the residence in Westchester. The device did not reach the residence.
Reports of additional packages at the White House are false, according to sources who spoke with PPD. Another was sent Monday to the home of leftwing billionaire George Soros in Bedford, New York.
“The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards,” Secretary Sanders added.

Heading into the final two-week stretch, President Donald Trump has held 20 rallies since July 5 and is slated to spend $20 million campaigning for Republican candidates nationwide. The Trump campaign said the president is “all-in” to ensure Republicans maintain control of the U.S. House and expand their majorities in the U.S. Senate.
Overall spending by the Trump Campaign will total over $20 million on the midterm elections, including the largest investment of $6 million in national TV and digital advertising, set to launch on Monday, October 29 through Election Day.
The president plans hold at least 10 more rallies before Election Day, for a total cost of more than $11 million.
“President Trump is all-in for the midterms to lead the GOP to victory on Election Day,” said Brad Parscale, Trump campaign manager. “His winning spirit is energizing Americans across the country to get out the vote and keep the momentum of our America First agenda going strong.”
On Monday, the president rallied with Senator Ted Cruz, R-Tx., and several GOP lawmakers in key battleground districts. President Trump is headed to Wisconsin on Wednesday to support Leah Vukmir for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Tammy Baldwin.
The rally in Wisconsin will be his seventeenth in the state and the second rally in the Mosinee/Wausau area since he announced his bid for president in June, 2015. President Trump became the first Republican presidential candidate to carry The Badger State since Ronald Reagan in 1984.
The media narrative leading up to 2018 has held Democrats would ride a Blue Wave of disapproval of the president and the Republican agenda. But in the final month, President Trump’s approval rating has hit the highest ever in the Wall Street Journal/NBC Poll, and one point from the highest in the Fox Poll.
“In the battleground districts and states, the president’s approval rating has risen considerably,” PPD Election Projection Model Director Rich Baris, said. “I’m not anchored to the approval rating theory, but it certainly won’t hurt Republicans.”
To build up the resources needed for difficult races, President Trump and Vice President Pence have appeared at dozens of candidate and GOP committee fundraisers throughout the midterm campaign season.
Just this week, the Trump Campaign is making a direct transfer of $3 million to the Republican National Committee (RNC) to assist in the final two weeks of campaigning nationwide. This follows direct contributions made by the Trump Campaign in August to 107 House and Senate campaigns totaling $214,000.
“With so much at stake in the midterms, we’re leaving everything on the field to build on our incredible progress for the American people,” said Lara Trump, campaign senior advisor. “Now, President Trump is counting on voters to be all-in to Make America Great Again on November 6th. Complacency is not an option!”

But neither is the ideal option for ordinary people who want upward mobility.
Back in 2016, I shared Census Bureau data showing that income was growing much faster for people in Texas, especially if you focus on median income (and this data doesn’t even adjust for the cost of living).
So why is Texas growing faster?
Unsurprisingly, I think part of the answer is that the burden of government is significantly greater in California.
Texas is not the freest state, but its #10 ranking is much better than California’s lowly #48 position.
If you’re wondering why Illinois isn’t at or near the bottom, keep in mind that this is a measure of overall economic freedom, not just fiscal policy.
In other words, California doesn’t just have onerous taxes and an excessive burden of government, it also has lots of red tape and intervention.
These numbers presumably help explain why Babylon Bee came up with this clever satire.
The Texas legislature has approved construction of a border wall surrounding the state in order to keep out unwanted refugees fleeing the rapidly crumbling dystopia of California. …The wall will run around the entirety of Texas, with extra security measures on the west side of the state to ensure undesirable Californian immigrants can’t make it across. …the west side will feature a 10-foot-thick concrete wall with laser turrets, barbed wire, and a moat filled with sharks to stop residents of the coastal state from slipping in undocumented and undetected. …“Far too many immigrants from California come here, take advantage of our pro-business, pro-liberty laws, and refuse to adjust to our way of life,” one Texas state rep said in an address to the assembly. “It is time for us to build a wall and make Governor Jerry Brown pay for it.”
This is the flip side of Walter Williams’ joke about California building a wall to keep taxpayers imprisoned.
But let’s return to serious analysis.
Writing for Forbes, Chuck DeVore highlights some differences between his home state and his new state.
Over the past decade, the top states by GDP growth are: North Dakota, Texas, Nebraska, Washington, and Oregon. …When using Supplemental Poverty Measure, the states with the highest poverty as averaged from 2014 to 2016, are: California (20.4%); Florida (18.8%); Louisiana (18.4%), Arizona (17.8%) and Mississippi (16.9%). The national average Supplemental Poverty rate over the last three years reported was 14.7%. Texas’ poverty rate was at the national average. …Combining two key factors, economic growth from 2007 to 2017 and the Supplemental Poverty Measure from 2014 to 2016, provides a better look at a state’s economic wellbeing.
Here’s a table from his column, which looks at growth and poverty in the nation’s five-largest states.
Texas wins for prosperity and California “wins” for poverty.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he was “deeply concerned by the violence provoked by some members” of the migrant caravan on its way to the U.S. southern border. Despite the efforts of the Mexican government, a growing group of Central American migrants numbering in the thousands resumed their advance toward the U.S. border early Sunday.
“We are concerned that these migrants may be victimized by human smugglers or others who would exploit them,” Mr. Pompeo said in an emailed statement. :We also are deeply concerned by the violence provoked by some members of the group, as well as the apparent political motivation of some organizers of the caravan.”
Though there were no official numbers, the lead caravan is estimated to amount to roughly 7,000. There is now a second caravan of about 1,000, which left Honduras and is working its way toward linking up with the main group.
President Donald Trump tweeted Monday the United States will begin cutting off foreign aid to countries that have failed to stop a growing group of thousands of migrants marching its way through Mexico and to the U.S. border.
He singled out Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. The latter is home base for the violent MS-13 gang and immigration is the primary source of their recruitment.
“Sadly, it looks like Mexico’s Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States,” the president tweeted. “Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy. Must change laws!”

Every time you see a Caravan, or people illegally coming, or attempting to come, into our Country illegally, think of and blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic Immigration Laws! Remember the Midterms! So unfair to those who come in legally.
Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the U.S. We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid routinely given to them.

Leftwing political and immigration activists working with organizations like Pueblo Sin Fronteras to arrange for these caravans to illegally cross at a non-port of entry to claim asylum. The Trump Administration has ramped up the prosecutions of false asylum claims, setting records.
Ex-legislator Bartolo Fuentes, who is said to have organized the march, was detained by Guatemalan authorities after failing to register with migration officials upon entering the country. Wilmer Simon Gomez and Michael Fajardo were among two others detained from the migrant group.

The Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) eased to +0.17 in September, but August was upwardly revised to a very solid +0.27. While it declined, the reading was still at the high end of the forecast range.
Two of the four broad categories of indicators that make up the index decreased from August, but three of the four categories made positive contributions to the index in September. The index’s three-month moving average, CFNAI-MA3, moved down to +0.21 in September from +0.27 in August.
The CFNAI Diffusion Index, which is also a three-month moving average, was unchanged at +0.18 in September. Forty-six of the 85 individual indicators made positive contributions to the CFNAI in September, while 39 made negative contributions. Thirty-six indicators improved from August to September, while 49 indicators deteriorated. Of the indicators that improved, 11 made negative contributions.
