IMA: Indiana Is the Most Manufacturing Intensive State in America

The Indiana Manufacturers Association (IMA) endorsed Republican businessman Mike Braun for U.S. Senate. The businessman from Jasper, who upset two sitting congressmen to earn the right to challenge vulnerable incumbent Senator Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., in November, previously received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

The IMA released the following statement in full:

Indiana is the most manufacturing intensive state in America. More of this state’s economy and jobs are produced by manufacturing than any other industry. More Hoosiers work in manufacturing than in any other industry. Policies that help manufacturers help Hoosiers. We have examined each candidate in the Indiana United States Senate race and have determined that Mike Braun is best suited to advance those policies in Congress.

While Indiana has made wonderful strides in creating an economic climate that will lead to growth, there are significant issues impacting Indiana manufacturers. Many of these issues originate in Washington, D.C. We need leaders who will support pro-growth, commonsense legislation that helps Hoosier manufacturers compete around the world. The IMA is confident that Mike Braun is the best qualified candidate, with a proved track-record to achieve these goals.

The IMA is proud to endorse Mike Braun for the United States Senate.

In 2016, President Donald Trump crushed Hillary Clinton in Indiana, 56.8% to 37.9%. Vice President Mike Pence calls it home and Senator Donnelly largely secured reelection in 2012 because of a flawed challenger. The president, who remains very popular in the state, endorsed Mr. Braun and both have seized on the issue of trade and manufacturing.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a division within the U.S. Labor Department, the state of Indiana lost at least 18% of the manufacturing industry during the period 1994 to 2015, years impacted by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The cutoff for the figure is the second quarter of 2015, when the latest available employment data was released by the Labor Department.

From the third quarter of 1993 to the aforementioned period, The Hoosier State lost at least 113,000 manufacturing jobs, a conservative number that factors both jobs created by exports and jobs displaced by imports. Meanwhile, the percentage of all private sector jobs that are manufacturing jobs in the state of Indiana fell from 28% to 20.2% during the NAFTA-WTO period.

From the time NAFTA was enacted in 1994 to 2010, the Economic Policy Institute found that 24,400 jobs had been lost or displaced in Indiana–not to mention about 700,000 in the U.S.–due only to the rise in the U.S.-Mexican trade deficit alone.

Carrier, an Indianapolis-based manufacturing plant, announced in February 2015 that they would ship more than a thousand jobs to Mexico. Then-candidate Trump, who ran on renegotiating NAFTA and withdrawing the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), pledged to keep those jobs in the U.S. if elected. Even before he was sworn in, then-President-elect Trump secured a deal to reverse the company’s decision, and held the announcement event in Indiana.

Upon taking office, President Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the U.S. from TPP and the White House recently announced the renegotiation of NAFTA into the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA). The new deal includes some of the strongest U.S. worker protections ever in a trade agreement, including raising the minimum requirements for wages and production levels.

“Manufacturing is the backbone of Indiana’s economy, and I’m honored to accept this endorsement from Indiana’s leading advocate for manufacturers: the IMA,” Mr. Braun said in a statement. “In my four decades building a business, I’ve jumped over just about every hurdle Washington can put in your path.”

“I look forward to working with the IMA to help Indiana manufacturing keep thriving and to keep Washington out of their way.”

The U.S. Senate Election Projection Model projects Indiana a Battleground, though it’s threatening a revision to Slightly Republican.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Nikki Haley cited the foreign success of the Trump Administration during a send-off at the White House on Tuesday. President Donald Trump said the former governor of South Carolina discussed resigning at the end of the year month’s ago, and that she will stay on until the end of the year.

“Nikki Haley, the Ambassador to the United Nations, has been very special person to me. She’s not only fantastic at her job, but she’s someone who gets it,” the president said in the Oval Office, praising her for the job she has done in the administration. “She told me maybe 6 months ago at the end of the year, ‘I’d like to take a little time off. I’d like to take a break.”

“I can speak for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo when I say, he thinks the world of you.”

Secretary of State Pompeo just completed an overseas trip to Asia, including Japan, North Korea, South Korea and China. He said the details of a second nuclear summit between President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un are “getting very close” to being finalized.

“We’re all happy for you in one way, but we hate to see you go,” President Trump said to the ambassador. “That’s the thing she did best at the United Nations. She got to know the players. They like her, and I think more importantly, they respect her.”

“Nikki you’ve done a fantastic job and I want to thank you so much.”

Ambassador Haley has been a staunch supporter of President Trump’s America First Foreign Policy Doctrine, otherwise known as “principled realism.” While opposed to foreign intervention, it’s predicated on the principles of offensive realism and requires firm responses to regimes like Iran and North Korea to avoid conflict.

Ambassador Haley has a more hawkish view on foreign interventions, but has carried out the president’s agenda.

“I want to thank the president for allowing us to come out and talk to you in this way. It’s been the honor of a lifetime. Look at the two years. Look at what’s happened in foreign policy in two years. They may not like what we do all the time, but they respect us now. We’ve made it stronger,” she said defending the demand to reform the United Nations allied relationships. “We’ve made it more efficient.”

In June 2017, the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to impose the severe sanctions on North Korea ever over their intercontinental ballistic missile program. Resolution 2371 (2017) cost the North Korean regime roughly one-third of their exports, totaling more than $1 billion and forcing Chairman Kim to the first ever summit between President Trump and Chairman Kim in Singapore, where the two agreed to work toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

U.S. Ambassador Haley’s speech at U.N. Security Council Briefing on North Korea was widely praised, and she is considered key to the resolution’s passage.

“It was a blessing to go into the U.N. everyday with body armor and fight for America,” she said. “It was a blessing, and I will always do that.”

She also blasted the anti-Israel bias at the U.N., something the U.S. under the Trump Administration has not ignored. In October 2017, the Trump Administration withdrew the U.S. from UNESCO, citing badly-needed reforms and a continued anti-Israel bias. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has long been under fire for exposed corruption and bias that continues to go unaddressed.

In 2015, the then-Republican South Carolina governor supported Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., over the president. In 2016, during the president campaign, she often had a contentious and soft relationship. But the two have fostered a closer relationship and friendship during the two years of the administration, a result of the president reaching out to the establishment wing of the Republican Party.

“No I’m not running for 2020. I can tell you what I’ll be doing is campaigning for this one,” she said turning to the president.

“I think it’s time for government officials to understand it’s time to step aside,” she said, adding the fresh people are needed from time-to-time to ensure energy is getting the job done. “The truth is I want to make sure this administration, this president, has the strongest person to fight.”

President Trump said he will name a successor within the “next two or three weeks, maybe sooner.”

The U.S. Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Brett Kavanaugh as the 114th justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. It was the closest vote ever for a confirmed justice and almost became the first time the vice president ever needed to cast the tie-breaking vote in the U.S. Senate to confirm a justice to the High Court.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the Constitutional Oath and retired retired Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy administered the Judicial Oath. President Donald Trump held a swearing-in ceremony Monday night at the White House.

Defeated in the confirmation battle, the Democratic Party has sought to cast doubts on the credibility of the U.S. Supreme Court, the last of the three branches of the federal government in which voters still have faith.

But voters disagree.

Half of likely voters (50%) think Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh belongs on the U.S. Supreme Court, a view even shared by 30% of Democrats. While a solid 77% of Republicans and 44% of voters not affiliated with either major party agree, the latter is split pretty even with 43% disagreeing.

Still, overall, 42% disagree and it doesn’t get too much better for Democrats among those paying close attention. Among voters who have been following news reports about Justice Kavanaugh more closely than previous nominees to the High Court, 53% say he belongs on the U.S. Supreme Court; 43% disagree.

By gender, 54% of men say Justice Kavanaugh belongs on the U.S. Supreme Court, while just 38% disagree. Women are more evenly split, thought they too break for the newest member of the nation’s highest court, 47% to 45%.

Meanwhile, Republicans are most likely (77%) to say they have followed news reports about this confirmation more closely than news about previous U.S. Supreme Court nominees. At 74%, Democrats are a close second and 54% of voters not affiliated with either party are the least likely.

Worth noting, Justice Kavanaugh kept his promise to the U.S. Senate and hired the first ever all-female law clerk team at the Court. With the addition of Justice Kavanaugh’s team, women make up a majority of law clerks at the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time in U.S. history.

The national phone and online survey of 1,000 likely voters in the U.S. was conducted October 7-8, 2018, by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. See methodology.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the reconnaissance aircraft indicate maximum sustained winds increased to near 100 mph (155 km/h) with even higher gusts. It’s forecast to strengthen from a steady to rapid pace over the next 24 hours or so. Michael is forecast to become a major hurricane by Tuesday night.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). Additional strengthening is expected, and Hurricane Michael is forecast to be a major hurricane at landfall in Florida. Weakening is expected after landfall as Michael moves through the southeastern United States.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km). NOAA buoy 42003 recently reported 1-minute mean winds of 47 mph (76 km/h) and a wind gust of 54 mph (87 km/h).

The latest minimum central pressure reported by the NOAA aircraft is 968 mb (28.58 inches).

A northward to north-northwestward motion at a slightly faster forward speed is expected through Tuesday night, followed by a northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Michael will move over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico tonight, then move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico Tuesday and Tuesday night. The center of Michael is expected to move inland over the Florida Panhandle or Florida Big Bend area on Wednesday, and then move northeastward across the southeastern United States Wednesday night and Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km). A wind gust to 56 mph (91 km/h) was recently reported at Apalachicola Regional Airport.

The estimated minimum central pressure based on NOAA and Air Force Reserve Hunter aircraft data is 933 mb (27.55 inches).

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Small Business Optimism Index eased slightly from a record-high reading to 107.9 in September, the third highest in the survey’s 45-year history. Small business optimism posted the highest reading ever last month at 108.8, with capital expenditures stronger than ever before.

In 2018, economic growth for small business has produced 45-year record highs for job openings, hiring plans, actual job creation, compensation increases (actual and planned), profit growth, and inventory investment.

“The economy continues to deliver a spectacular performance for one so near its record length. Small business owners continue to face labor force challenges but are increasing compensation to keep up,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. “With profits and investment remaining strong, our hope is that policymakers will stay the course and not screw around with success.”

The September 2018 survey showed:

Actual capital spending in the past few months rose significantly.
Average employment change per firm was solid.
Owners bulked up inventories.
Compensation increases set a new record.

“This is the longest streak of small business optimism in history, evidence that tax cuts and regulatory rollbacks are paying off for the economy as a whole,” said NFIB President and CEO Juanita D. Duggan. “Our members say that business is booming and prospects continue to look bright.”

Actual investment spending improved as prospects for the economy remain strong. Sixty percent (60%) of small business owners reported capital outlays, up 4 points from August. Of those making expenditures, 41% reported spending on new equipment (+2), 26% acquired vehicles (+4) and 16% improved or expanded facilities (-2).

Consumer spending temporarily slowed in August, likely producing excess inventories but has picked up again which will reverse the build-up. The net percent of owners expecting higher real sales volumes rose three points to a net 29 percent of owners. Owners reporting inventory increases rose one point to a net five percent (seasonally adjusted). Strong expectations for higher real sales translate into higher expected returns on capital investments as well as a need for more employees.

A record net 37% of owners reported raising overall compensation, as reported in last week’s NFIB monthly jobs report. This surpasses the previous record of a net 35% in May 2018. Twenty-four percent plan to increase total compensation at their firm and 6% plan reductions. Sixty-one percent (61%) of owners reported hiring or trying to hire, with 87% of those reporting few or no qualified workers. Thirty-eight percent (38%) of owners reported job openings they could not fill in the current period, unchanged from last month.

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index eased

The watch is also in effect from the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi-Alabama border. Hurricane watches are issued 48 hours before the arrival of tropical-storm-force winds which is when outside preparations become dangerous.

Tropical Storm Warning

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Alabama/Florida border to Suwannee River Florida and the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.

Tropical Storm Watch

Tropical storm watches are in effect from Suwanee River, Florida, to Anna Maria Island, Florida, including Tampa Bay. Also in a tropical storm watch is a swath of the Alabama/Florida border to the Mississippi/Alabama border as well as inland areas of southern Alabama and southwest Georgia.

Storm Surge Watch

A storm surge watch is in effect from Navarre, Florida, to Anna Maria Island, Florida, including Tampa Bay. This means life-threatening storm surge inundation is possible in the watch area within 48 hours.

Women Make Up Majority of Law Clerks at the High Court for First Time in U.S. History

Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh kept his promise to the U.S. Senate and hired the first ever all-female law clerk team at the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS). On Sunday, Justice Kavanaugh held at meeting with his four female law clerks in chambers previously occupied by Justice Samuel Alito, who recently moved to those belonging to Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Kim Jackson, Shannon Grammel, Megan Lacy and Sara Nommensen, along with Justice Kavanaugh were preparing for hearing the first round of cases this week. Ms. Jackson is one of three black law clerks currently working this term at the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Kavanaugh previously hired Ms. Jackson and one of the other black clerks.

Justice Kavanaugh, 53, served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit before he was nominated by President Trump to replace Justice Kennedy in July. The Roberts Court’s traditional swing vote announced a few weeks before that he would retire, effective July 31.

He is the second justice nominated by President Trump and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, the first being Justice Neil Gorsuch. Both jurists clerked for Justice Kennedy, and Justice Gorsuch was the first ever to hire a Native American law clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. administered the Constitutional Oath and retired Justice Kennedy administered the Judicial Oath. A swearing in ceremony is scheduled Monday night at the White House.

With the retirement of Justice Kennedy, the gutter-bound battle over the ideological lean of the High Court hit a new low. The Senate Judiciary Committee began holding hearings for the confirmation on September 4. Despite Democrats’ repeated attempts to obstruct, pay protestors and stage outbursts, they didn’t land a glove on him.

He told the committee at the time four female law clerks were ready to work for him “on a moment’s notice” and that it would make him “the first justice in the history of the Supreme Court to have a group of all-women law clerks.”

“A majority of my 48 law clerks over the last 12 years have been women,” the judge told members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “In my time on the bench, no federal judge — not a single one in the country — has sent more women law clerks to clerk on the Supreme Court than I have.”

It was and is well-known among D.C. circuit law clerks that disparaging remarks about women will not be tolerated by “the judge’s judge.”

Six of his former law clerks are working at the U.S. Supreme Court this term, which is twice the number of any other appeals court judge, and four of them are women.

Then, Professor Christine Blasey Ford, a liberal activist and Palo Alto University psychology professor, alleged Justice Kavanaugh attempted to rape her at a high-school party in or about 1982, when he was 17 and she was 15. The allegation was made in a letter to Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

She withheld it for 6 weeks and it was only until after the committee confirmation hearings that the letter was leaked, allegedly against Professor Ford’s wishes to remain anonymous.

With Senate Democrats and their media allies willing to believe any allegation no matter how flimsy, one uncorroborated charge after another followed. all of which crumbled under scrutiny. Professor Ford’s story subsequently began to fall apart, as well.

For Democrats, the loss of credibility regarding the allegations won’t sway them from claiming the Court won’t “fully recover from a confirmation process marked by raw anger and partisan polarization,” as The New York Times put it.

Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, is vowing to  open a congressional investigation into allegations if Republicans lose control of the U.S. House to Democrats in November. He declared the U.S. Senate “failed to do its proper constitutionally mandated job of advise and consent.”

For supporters, the hiring of the first ever all female law clerk team at the U.S. Supreme Court is just more proof Justice Kavanaugh will be a fair judge. He kept his promise to the U.S. Senate and it’s time for Democrats to allow Justice Kavanaugh to put these uncorroborated accusations behind him.

With the addition of Justice Kavanaugh’s first ever all-female team, women make up a majority of law clerks at the U.S. Supreme Court for the first time in U.S. history.

Michigan native and conservative musician Ted Nugent sang a song of praise for John James, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in The Wolverine State. Speaking to the Don Smith Show during an interview that aired Saturday, the rocker best known for his advocacy of gun ownership rights, said Mr. James “represents We the People.”

“John James represents We the People,” he said. “He represents the best of the best and we pray to God he can reverse the liberal agenda.”

“So, God Bless the man for making the sacrifices and running for public office in these trying times.”

Ted Nugent was born in Redford, Michigan, and raised in metropolitan Detroit, which the controversial rocker called “my beloved” “hell zone.” John James, a combat veteran and businessman, is is a pro-life, pro-Second Amendment and pro-business.

“It went in a catastrophic nosedive of liberal mediocrity, if not downright slovenliness, and it broke our hearts those of us who loved the spirit of real Detroit, the real spirit of Michigan. And John James represents that real spirit,” he said. “That real working hard, playing hard and be the best you can be spirit.”

Mr. James faces an uphill battle in November against incumbent Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow, who is viewed as a rather weak candidate. However, her war chest is huge and incumbent U.S. Senators are not easily toppled. The U.S. Senate election projection in Michigan is Likely Democrat.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the details of a second nuclear summit between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un are “pretty close” to getting hammered out. The secretary made these and other remarks after meeting with his Chinese counterparts in Beijing on October 8, to discuss the nuclear summit, as well as other bilateral, regional and global issues.

“Sometimes that last issue is hard to close. But we’re getting pretty close,” he told reporters. “And most importantly, both the leaders believe there’s real progress that can be made, substantive progress that can be made at the next summit, and so we’re going to get it at a time that works for each of the two leaders in a place that works for both of them.”

“We’re not quite there yet, but we’ll get there.”

China was the final stop on his overseas trip to Asia that included Japan, North Korea, South Korea and China. State Pompeo also met separately with Member of the Political Bureau and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Yang Jiechi and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.

They discussed the overall state of bilateral U.S.-China relations.

“The two sides reaffirmed their shared resolve to achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization of the DPRK, as agreed to by Chairman Kim in Singapore,” State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement. “The United States and China remain unified on our pressure campaign, and are committed to a bright future for the DPRK if Pyongyang denuclearizes quickly.‎”

On October 7, Secretary Pompeo and Special Representative Stephen E. Biegun met with Chairman Kim and Kim Yo-jong, First Vice Director of the Korean Workers’ Party Central Committee.

“They discussed the four elements contained in the U.S.-DPRK Singapore Summit Joint Statement signed by President Trump and Chairman Kim,” Ms. Nauert continued. “They also discussed the upcoming second summit between President Trump and Chairman Kim and refined options for the location and date of that next summit.”

In Singapore, Chairman Kim agreed to the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. In total, President Trump and Chairman Kim agreed to the four following elements:

Convinced that the establishment of new U.S.–DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that mutual confidence building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un state the following:

  1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.–DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.

  2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

  3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

  4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

Since the Singapore Summit, North Korea’s behavior has been up for debate, though it’s not debatable that the intercontinental ballistic missile tests have ceased. The State Department also said Chairman Kim invited inspectors to visit the Punggye Ri nuclear test site to confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled.

Secretary Pompeo departed Pyongyang on October 8 and immediately headed to South Korea to discuss the meeting with President Moon Jae-in. He also attended a working dinner with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.

On his way back to the U.S., the secretary stressed that the central big issues have to be negotiated by high-level officials, noting that Special Representative Biegun’s counterpart will be Choe Son-hui.

“We will be having more frequent and higher-level working group discussions than we’ve had in some time on a set of issues. So that was important good news,” Mr. Pompeo added. “So we’ll have a chance to meet here in between the summit date, as well.”

“But we do think, right, this is a place where, ultimately, some of these big, difficult issues have to be resolved by the nations’ most senior leaders, and we’re hoping to have those presented in a way that the two leaders can resolve them when they get together.”
