A Life in Numbers

Numbers are how one keeps score. Those who engage in any competitive endeavor — business, sports, even weight loss — seek numbers to tell them how well they’re doing and how much better than how many other people.

Tracking numbers also keeps us occupied and distracts us from the most concerning number of all, the number of our days. Dwell on that and the other numbers don’t seem very significant. But most work hard to avoid thoughts of our mortality. (Consult “The Denial of Death” by Ernest Becker.)

Long before Scrooge McDuck dove joyfully into his pile of gold coins, money had been the classic device for keeping score, certainly for those who had it. But the explosion of number collecting and analyzing tools has expanded the ability and desire to count all kinds of things. And sometimes numbers become the end in themselves.

Many accomplished marathoners continue to run into their 50s and beyond. As they move past the best performances of their youth, you’d think their focus would turn in a less competitive direction — that they would be happy that they can still run and find simple pleasure in it.

But there’s now an interactive tool that lets them track their declining running times and see how they compete against others in decline. Ray Fair, a Yale economist and runner, developed a table into which runners may insert their best times ever for a particular race and at what age. Out pops a prediction of what they might expect as the years pass.

As Fair told a reporter, “they know they will slow down as they grow older, but as long as they slow down as much as the site says they will, they are fine.”

And if they slow down faster, one might ask, so what? That they’re still running seems rather impressive to us spectators. What’s going on? Masochism, narcissism, idle curiosity?

Fitness apps let any of us monitor every aspect of our “program” — workout times, intensity and nature of the activity. Calculators track calories burned and calories consumed. The daily jumping on the scale no longer suffices.

I tried one of these apps until it occurred to me that the four rowing sessions I did last month are of zero consequence in the now. What I do today or tomorrow is the only thing that can change my health for the better. More often than not, the app tormented me with reminders of lax months.

Social media serves the lust for competitive counting with its ever-changing lists of followers, friends, likes, Klout scores and such. And that can also feed depression. One is never going to measure up to Shakira and her reported 104 million friends.

Of course, there is no scientific measure of excellence in friend accumulation. As any psychiatrist will tell you, two close friends do more for one’s well-being than 100 casual acquaintances. Shakira has complained of loneliness, so there you have it.

My electric utility sends me a monthly report on how energy-frugal I’ve been compared with my neighbors. It contains all kinds of percentages on my and others’ electricity use attached to a colorful bar chart.

I did particularly well two months ago, when I was almost never at home. Had my mapping apps relayed my whereabouts data to the utility, the electric company could have produced a more meaningful comparison. (Or perhaps they had. Who knows these days?)

Is meditation a helpful escape from all this rumination? Oh, there are meditation apps, and one congratulates me whenever I complete a 10-session module. How are you doing?

Grim Choices

We must frankly face the fact that the front runners in both political parties represent a new low, at a time of domestic polarization and unprecedented nuclear dangers internationally. This year’s general election will offer a choice between a thoroughly corrupt liar and an utterly irresponsible egomaniac.

The Republican establishment, whose serial betrayals of their supporters created the setting for a Donald Trump to arise, must now decide how best to deal with the apparent inevitability of his candidacy.

Choosing among various unpalatable options may require some tricky maneuvering on their part, but they have been used to tricky maneuvering before, which is how they find themselves in this predicament in the first place.

Apparently some Republican leaders have opted to try to make the best of a bad situation by creating at least the illusion of party “unity” going into this year’s elections. But the toxic image of Donald Trump can follow the Republicans repeatedly in future elections.

The careers of young Republicans are especially at risk of acquiring an indelible stain by being associated with Trump, much as Marco Rubio may never live down his association with Senator Chuck Schumer’s attempt to create bipartisan amnesty.

The smart money says that, when all is said and done, Republican voters are going to have to vote for Trump. If they stay home, that is the same as voting for Hillary Clinton.

As former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich put it, Hillary Clinton in the White House means a Supreme Court packed with justices who will undermine the Constitution for decades to come. He has a point — but not necessarily a decisive point.

Seeing the freedom for which generations of Americans have fought and died eroded away by judicial sophistry in the coming years is certainly a grim prospect.

But nuclear annihilation is one of the few prospects that are even worse — and a man with a runaway egomania may not have the finesse or the depth to steer through troubled international waters that include a nuclear Iran and a nuclear North Korea.

If a man in his sixties has not yet matured, he is unlikely to grow up in his seventies. This is not a question about whether Donald Trump is as evil as Hillary Clinton. He may well be the proverbial “lesser of the two evils” in that sense, and yet be the more dangerous President to have in the White House.

Some have argued that a President Trump could surround himself with experienced and savvy advisers to cover for his own shallow understanding of many national and international issues. But Barack Obama has already shown us that a headstrong egomaniac can ignore even unanimous advice from military advisers. That is how he pulled troops out of Iraq and set the stage for ISIS.

Those of us who are far more concerned about the fate of this country than about the fate of the Republican party face far tougher questions than how to get through this year’s election.

Some people are said to be thinking about a third-party candidate. Desperate times may call for desperate measures. But if such a desperate choice is made, a third party has virtually no chance of electing its candidate.

The most a third party could hope for would be to take enough votes from both Democrats and Republicans to deny either party’s candidate a victory in the Electoral College. That would throw the election of the President of the United States into the House of Representatives.

No one knows who would then become President. But it would be hard to find someone worse than either Hillary or Trump.

The very fact that we are left with such desperate options is not only a rebuke to the professional politicians, but also a painful revelation about the voting public.

Immediately after electing a President with virtually no track record, on the basis of rhetoric and symbolism, and seeing disaster after disaster during his administration, many are now prepared to do the same thing all over again.

More than two centuries ago, Thomas Jefferson said, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” If so, can people who cannot be bothered to look up from their electronic devices expect to remain a free people?

Resisting Obama’s Transgender Directive: A Hill to Die On

To achieve its political ends, the left doesn’t just assault the Constitution through the appointment of liberal activist judges; there are a variety of other leftist abuses, such as politicizing the departments of Justice and Education.

In its mission statement, the Justice Department states that one of its aims is “to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.”

That goal underscores cherished principles of American jurisprudence and the Constitution, including the preamble’s commitment to “establish Justice,” the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law and the rule of law itself.

Justice is supposed to be blind, in the sense of impartiality and being free from political influences. The rule of law ensures that we have a government of laws, not men — meaning that no one is above the law and everyone should be treated equally. The law must be fairly applied and enforced, or it will cease to function as a safeguard of rights and a guarantor of justice.

The political left subscribes to these principles only by lip service, if at all, because its overarching goal is to accomplish its policy goals, irrespective of the damage it does to the very process that guarantees our liberties.

This is why the left, without remorse, appoints results-oriented, activist judges, whom they view not as protectors of the Constitution and law but as vehicles to advance its political agenda by any means necessary, including twisting the meaning of constitutional and statutory provisions and often inventing rights out of whole cloth. It’s why it doesn’t even blink when one of its own usurps legislative authority and issues lawless executive orders in contravention of the people’s will, even while knowing he has no constitutional authority to do so. It’s why it deliberately refuses to enforce immigration laws. It’s why it blackmails state governments, through the threat of withholding funds, into doing the will of the federal government. It’s why it privately applauds the use of the IRS to target its political opponents. And it’s why it stacks the Justice Department with radical leftists whose mission to effect changes in policy supersedes its duty of ensuring the fair and impartial administration of justice.

As such, it’s no surprise that the Obama administration has issued an edict barring “discrimination” against students based on their “gender identity.” The Department of Justice and the Department of Education each announced that “both federal agencies treat a student’s gender identity as the student’s sex for purposes of enforcing Title IX.”

Understand that with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Congress never intended “sex” to include “gender identity.” The purpose was to ensure women and girls equal treatment under the law. No one in his wildest imagination conceived that lawless public officials would later contort the statute to prevent discrimination against transgender people.

The administration proclaims, “Gender identity refers to an individual’s internal sense of gender.” So forget your biological makeup; if today you want to identify as a woman, men, you may, and if people refuse to go along with the ruse, they will be punished with the full force of federal law.

Specifically, the administration’s directive last week requires every public school in the nation to provide transgender students access to all activities and facilities consistent with their gender identity, at the risk of losing federal funds.

The Framers are rolling over in their graves, not just because of this inversion of moral standards but also because of the lawless manner in which this is being forced down the throats of the states, the American people and the public schools.

President Obama knows he doesn’t have the legal authority to issue such an order, but he is determined to create as much chaos as he can and to unilaterally impose his iron will to the fullest extent before his term expires.

No one will convince me that this has anything to do with the rights of transgender people. Rather, Obama and his fellow leftist tyrants are seeing how far they can push the envelope — how much they can fundamentally transform America against the people’s will and against the protections guaranteed by the federal and state constitutions.

The Obama administration obviously cares not a whit for the privacy of students who don’t want to be forced to share a restroom with students of the opposite sex. The rights of the many will be subordinated to the rights of the very, very few — not to protect the rights of those few but to manufacture rights that don’t exist to make an authoritarian statement on behalf of Big Brother.

Folks, there has to be a tipping point — a point at which we’ll no longer tolerate this kind of tyranny, even if it means the states’ forgoing blood money from the federal leviathan.
This is a hill to die on, and if the sane states don’t fight back on this one, we might as well just completely surrender the republic today. It’s either that or eventually seeing the people rise up in a way we haven’t witnessed for many years.
